(Bloomberg) -- The face-to-face meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida will clear up many uncertainties about the two countries' relations, Yang Yi, a professor at the People's Liberation Army National Defense University, wrote in an opinion article in the China Daily. China and the U.S. should make extra efforts to increase benign interactions between their militaries, the professor wrote, adding Washington should drop "unnecessary" concerns about Beijing's growing defense capability. Two days of discussions kick off with a dinner tonight at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club.

- China is planning more policies to create jobs for key groups, including college graduates and discharged soldiers, the China Daily reported, citing a statement released after a State Council meeting Wednesday. Areas where excess industrial production capacity is being cut can also receive more support, the nation's flagship English-language newspaper said. With about 9 million college students entering the job market this summer, stable employment remains a key objective of the government this year.
- Beijing, Tianjin and some smaller cities in northern China will face a strict yearlong inspection over air pollution prevention, the Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the Ministry of Environmental Protection. It's another step in Xi Jinping's bid to transform China into an economy driven by consumption and innovation and away from traditional smokestack industries.
- Ning Jizhe, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, called for accurate data "by all means" as he talked to statistics officials in Zhejiang during a visit to the province, according to China Information Gazette, a newspaper affiliated with the bureau.
