(Bloomberg) -- Black and Asian Britons are less likely to have a job and own their own home than whites, an audit commissioned by Prime Minister Theresa May has found.
May ordered the review of data, published on Tuesday, after she took office in 2016. She said she hoped the findings would help the government address inequality. The prime minister is trying to use her Conservative Party's conference this week to talk about things other than Brexit.
“My most fundamental political belief is that how far you go in life should be based on your talent and how hard you work and nothing else,” May said in an emailed statement. “Britain has come a long way in my lifetime in spreading equality and opportunity, but this audit will be definitive evidence of how far we must still go in order to truly build a country that works for everyone.”

The audit found the unemployment rate for working age people from minority groups was 8 percent, compared with 4.6 percent for whites. Two thirds of white British householders own their own home, against two in five from other ethnic groups. But among children attending state-run schools, whites had the lowest university entry rate.
