Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Business Standard and the Economic Times on Monday, ahead of the monsoon session of parliament. 

In his interview to the Business Standard, Modi elaborated that the government has eschewed populism, and stuck to the path of fiscal prudence.

On the crucial question of tax reforms, Modi said “we need to move from a situation where only a few people pay direct taxes, and many escape, to a situation where many people pay a moderate amount.”
