Maharashtra Government Launches Rural Housing Campaign
India's richest state plans to initiate a mega scheme to provide houses in its rural areas.
As part of the campaign, the Maharashtra government aims to build as many as 8.82 lakh houses in the next 100 days at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore between Nov. 20, 2020, and Feb. 28, 2021, according to an official statement.
The scheme is being planned such that instead of just providing subsidy, it takes care of even constructing toilets and providing land to beneficiaries, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was quoted as saying in the statement, adding bank loans are also being provided to them. “There wouldn't be any paucity of funds for this scheme.”
The statement didn't specify the reasons why loans would be extended to beneficiaries.
The campaign would be run in such a manner that no rural family would be homeless, Hasan Mushrif, minister for rural development, was quoted saying. The minister assured land would be made available for the landless; regularising residential encroachments on government lands would also be taken up.
