Brexit Campaign Outstripped ‘Remain’ in Referendum Fundraising

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. groups that campaigned for the winning “Leave” side in last month's referendum on European Union membership raised almost a quarter more funds than “Remain” supporters between Feb. 1 and the day before the June 23 vote, the Electoral Commission said.

Some 18 pro-Brexit groups raised a total of 17.6 million pounds ($22.8 million), the commission said Wednesday in an e-mailed statement. Fifteen organizations that bid for Britain to stay in the EU raised 14.3 million pounds.

“Remain” edged ahead in the final two weeks of the campaign, raising some 2.3 million pounds compared with 2.1 million pounds by “Leave,” which had led in three previous reporting periods, according to the commission.

Britain voted by 52 percent to 48 percent to quit the 28-nation bloc, triggering the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and sending the pound plummeting.
