In a significant development for Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has given formal legal backing to Amaravati as the State's capital on Tuesday after President Droupadi Murmu granted assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM N Chandrababu Naidu wrote, "The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati."

Naidu, on Monday, also thanked everyone involved in getting the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026 approved by the President. "On behalf of my people of Andhra Pradesh, I express profound gratitude to Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji for her gracious assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of our capital. I thank the Union Government led by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for his commitment to our state and his guidance, all MPs who supported the Bill, our state leaders, and every citizen who stood with us. This is a victory for my people of Andhra Pradesh, especially my farmers of Amaravati," [sic] he wrote on X.

Last week, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that Amaravati's status as the capital of Andhra Pradesh has received unanimous support from the country. Addressing a press conference, Naidu asserted that after receiving the central government's sovereign seal, no one can alter the status of the capital city in the future. "They (YSRCP) wanted to destroy Amaravati, but we brought a law.

Today, the entire country stands behind Amaravati. Overcoming all conspiracies, Amaravati has emerged victorious." The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, making Amaravati the capital of the southern state, was passed by the Parliament. He claimed that letters were written to the World Bank, opposing Amaravati and false narratives were spread against the project, including claims about its viability and safety.
