West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said that the Adani Group's decision to set up a 2,000-bed hospital in New Town area near Kolkata is a "big achievement" for the state.

He said half of the beds in the hospital would be provided to the poor for free.

"The Adani Group is planning to build a hospital in New Town. Karan Adani had met me, and I had given written consent for it," Adhikari said at the state secretariat.

Of the proposed 2,000 beds, 1,000 would be free beds for poor people, while the rest would be used for commercial purposes, he said.

Adhikari said Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani had sent a commitment letter expressing his intention to begin work soon.

"Gautam Adani has sent his commitment letter expressing his will to start work for the hospital. This is a big achievement for West Bengal," the chief minister said.
