The Goods and Service Tax (GST) Council met in the capital on Friday but did not discuss the contentious issue of dual control, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac told BloombergQuint. While states sought to discuss the cross-empowerment issue, the finance minister wanted to discuss the draft Model GST Law, Issac added. The government released the revised drafts of three GST laws last month.
“On dual control there is no consensus so far. It will be taken up tomorrow (Friday),” said Jammu and Kashmir finance minister, Haseeb Drabu. The state finance ministers also hoped to clear a large chunk of the model GST law on Saturday, he added.
The Council is also expected to take up the impact of demonetisation on state revenue when they reconvene for the two-day meeting, Isaac said, while reiterating that meeting the April 1, 2017 deadline to roll out GST was an ambitious but achievable target.
