Spot silver prices touched a two year high of $21 per ounce on Monday, before retreating. In fact, the trend of gold outperforming silver reversed at the start of this financial year, when silver started playing catch-up.

The return differential between the two precious metals has been especially pronounced since the Brexit vote. Silver rallied over 12 percent since the vote compared to gold, which has rose just over 2 percent.

In 2016 so far, gold has given a return of 26.6 percent versus silver which gained 44.1 percent in the same period.

Investor's appetite for silver comes after two years of underperformance. And despite Tuesday's 1.6 percent fall in international prices, silver still trumps gold in 2016.
