Indian pharmaceutical companies received 45 percent more drug application approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the first half of 2016, despite regulatory issues at various plants.

Drug companies received a total of 129 abbreviated new drug application approvals in the first six months of the year, as compared to 89 approvals during the same period in the last year.

This rise can be attributed to two reasons. First, it's mostly the large listed companies that have run into trouble with the U-S drug regulator. The smaller firms have continued to file applications.

Second, even those firms that have run into trouble with the FDA have filed applications from alternate sites.
