India's factory output slumps to 4.8% in January according to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 4.8% year-on-year during the month under review, as compared to 7.8% in December.

The slump was driven by the manufacturing sector, which grew at 4.8%. This was led by the production of basic metals, motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers and non-metallic mineral products, the ministry said in a release.

In the preceding month, the manufacturing output had grown by 5.8%.

The growth in mining sector also contributed to the dip in IIP. The sectoral output rose by 4.3% in January, as compared to a 4.4% growth in December.

Electricity generation in January, however, rose 5.1% as compared to a 2.4% growth in December.

On use-based classification, the output of primary goods rose by 3.1%, as against a 5.5% growth in the previous month. Capital goods output jumped 4.3%, following a 10.2% climb in December.

The production of intermediate goods increased by 6% from 5.3% in December, whereas infrastructure goods saw a growth of 13.7% from 7.3%.

A drop in consumption has also likely factored in the fall of industrial output, as consumer durables grew 6.3% in January after a 7.1% rise in December, whereas consumer non-durables fell 2.7% following a 0.1% advance.
