(Bloomberg View) -- To many in the money-management industry, strategy is akin to religious dogma. To Ranji Nagaswami, chief executive officer of Hirtle Callaghan & Co., it's just the opposite: agnosticism. She'll look at passive management at one end of the spectrum to alternative investments like private equity and venture capital on the other -- with everything in between up for consideration.

Nagaswami, who has five women on her executive team, also explains why is it is important for women to be included at the table at investment firms. She notes that extensive academic research shows that women are less emotional when it comes to money management, that they make better decisions and have better performance.

Previously, she was co-head of U.S. fixed income at UBS Asset Management and chief investment officer of Alliance Bernstein Investments in the group's retail and mutual fund division. From 2010 to 2012, Ranji served as chief investment adviser to the administration of Michael R. Bloomberg while he served as New York mayor.
