Suicides in Japan Decline to Lowest Since 1990s Malaise: Chart
(Bloomberg) -- Suicides in Japan fell for a seventh year in 2016 to just under 22,000, the lowest since 1994, before a banking crisis triggered a rise in unemployment. While the National Police Agency didn't give a reason for the decrease, the data released March 23 showed a significant drop in the number of jobless people taking their own lives -- a statistic that matches a steady decline in the unemployment rate since 2009. Still, there were 17.3 suicides for every 100,000 Japanese citizens -- higher than the 11.4 global rate for 2012, according to the most recent World Health Organization figures.
