Nigeria's Military Denies Holding Biafra Separatist Leader Kanu

(Bloomberg) -- Nigeria's military denied holding Nnamdi Kanu, rebuffing a claim by the Biafra separatist leader's lawyer.

“Nnamdi Kanu is not in the custody of the military,” John Enenche, a military spokesman, said in comments broadcast Saturday on state-owned NTA television.

Kanu's lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor filed a federal court suit on Sept. 28, demanding that military authorities produce his client. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra was last seen on Sept. 14 before troops raided his residence in the southeastern city of Umuahia, according to Ejiofor.

“He was in his house when they came,” the lawyer said by phone on Saturday. “If he's alive they should let us know. If he's been killed, they should let us know.”
