The future is what will keep General Electric going forward. These were the parting words of the manufacturing giant's outgoing Chief Executive Officer Jeffery Immelt as he looked back at what he learnt during his 16-year tenure at the helm of affairs.
In a letter to the company's employees recently, posted through Immelt's LinkedIn account, he shared his “last two cents” - the lessons learnt.
The industrial internet and additive manufacturing will define GE in the future. Don't give up. Our best GE businesses have had a “True North” to build the future.Jeffery Immelt, Outgoing Chairman and CEO, General Electric
During his tenure, the company considerably invested in improving digital capabilities while exiting most consumer and lending businesses. Shares of the company, however, have seen a downturn in 2017.
Immelt seemed to be equally aware of his failures and reflected on that in his letter. “I know we can get better. Leadership is a deep journey into yourself,” he said.
He went on to qoute professional boxer Mike Tyson - “Everyone has a strategy until they get punched in the nose.”
Here's Jeffery Immelt's letter where he talks further about team work, making mistakes and winning in the market.
Immelt will serve as the chairman of the company's board until the end of the year.
