Law Firm Won’t Pay Fraud Compensation to Danish Authorities

(Bloomberg) -- Bech-Bruun, Denmark's biggest law firm, rejected all claims that it helped a foreign bank defraud the Danish government through a dividend tax scam.

Bech-Bruun doesn't expect to pay the compensation claim raised by the government, which local media estimate to be about 750 million kroner ($110 million), the law firm said in statement published on Monday.

Danish authorities allege that Bech-Bruun helped aid North Channel Bank of Germany which took part in a larger European tax fraud case. Denmark is trying to get back $2.1 billion that it says criminals have stolen by claiming refunds on dividend taxes they never paid, in some cases from stocks they never owned.

The law firm said its legal advise to the German bank could in no way have been used to support criminal activities or to construct an illegal dividend scheme.
