German Coronavirus Deaths Rise to 1,275 With 168 New Fatalities

(Bloomberg) --

The number of coronavirus deaths and confirmed cases in Germany climbed further, a day after Robert Koch Institute President Lothar Wieler warned the country might still need additional intensive-care space even after boosting capacity by more than 40% since the outbreak began.

Deaths rose by 168 to 1,275 on Saturday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Some 91,159 people are infected, the third highest in Europe after Italy and Spain, and 6,365 more than on Friday.

The death rate in Europe's largest economy has been well below the levels seen in Italy and Spain, but government officials and healthcare experts insist it's too early to ease social distancing rules and transport restrictions.

Angela Merkel returned to her office on Friday after a 12-day, self-enforced quarantine. At least three tests showed the 65-year-old German chancellor was free of the coronavirus. Speaking to the public from the Berlin chancellory for the first time since the quarantine, she urged citizens to continue to minimize social contact through the Easter holidays.
