Fresh Quality Control Order Issued For Aluminium And Its Alloys
Aluminium smelting is highly energy-intensive, requiring 13,500-15,000 kWh per tonne.

The Indian government has issued a new Quality Control Order (QCO) for aluminium and aluminium products, effective from Oct. 1, 2025.

The government has mandated compliance with specified Indian Standards for products such as aluminium alloy tubes for irrigation, EC-grade aluminium rods, and wrought aluminium alloy bars.

The QCO has still provided exemptions for imports intended for research and development purposes. This initiative is part of the government's broader effort to prevent the import and sale of substandard products, ensuring higher quality in the domestic market. It also helps India ringfence its trade from neighbouring countries like China that have a history of dumping.

The implementation timeline varies based on enterprise size:

  • Medium and Large Enterprises: Compliance required by October 1, 2025

  • Small Enterprises: Compliance required by January 1, 2025

  • Micro Enterprises: Compliance required by April 1, 2026
