EU Says British Referendum Must Be Dealt With in U.K. Context

(Bloomberg) -- The European Commission said the procedure for Britain exiting the European Union must be dealt with in the U.K. context.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker “respects Scottish democracy and the result in Scotland,” Margaritis Schinas, spokesman for the Brussels-based commission, told reporters on Thursday. “However, this is an issue that pertains to the constitutional order of the United Kingdom and will have to be dealt with this context.”

Juncker met with Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in Brussels on Wednesday.

``The British people voted; the British people decided,'' Schinas said. ``And we expect this to be notified according to the only procedure that the treaties provide.''

``The ball is now in the camp of the United Kingdom,'' he said.
