The Enforcement Directorate has approached the PMLA court to issue a non-bailable warrant against Mehul Choksi of Gitanjali Gems Ltd. in the Rs 12,700-crore Punjab National Bank-fraud case.
This move comes after the investigating agency approached the court to issue a non-bailable warrant against billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi. The agency's special counsel argued in court that both Modi and Choksi didn't appear despite being summoned three times.
The agency has already sought a non-bailable warrant against Modi. He and his firms are accused of obtaining loans on fraudulent guarantees issued by a Mumbai branch of the Punjab National Bank in connivance with some of the employees.
It also sought permission to issue letter rogatory to seven more countries, including Belgium. The PMLA court has already allowed ED to issue letter rogatory to six countries—the U.S., the U.K., Hong Kong, the UAE, South Africa and Singapore.
