The GIFT Nifty was trading flat at 24,833 as of 7:30 a.m., indicating a muted open for the benchmark Nifty 50.

US index futures climbed after the European Union struck a deal with President Donald Trump that will see the bloc face 15% tariffs on most exports, averting a potentially damaging trade war. S&P 500 contracts rose 0.4% and those for European stocks jumped 1%, according to Bloomberg.

Markets On Home Turf

The benchmark equity indices closed lower for the second straight day on Friday, weighed down by shares of Bajaj Finance Ltd., Infosys Ltd. and Reliance Industries Ltd. The indices recorded the longest weekly declining streak since Oct. 21, 2024.

The NSE Nifty 50 ended 225.1 points or 0.9% lower at 24,837, while the BSE Sensex closed 721.08 points or 0.88% down at 81,463.09.

Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers of Indian shares for the fifth consecutive day on Friday as they sold stocks worth Rs 1,979.96 crore, according to provisional data from the NSE.

The domestic institutional investors, who stayed buyers for the 15th straight session, acquired stocks worth Rs 2,138.59 crore.

Wall Street Recap

US stocks rose to fresh records on Friday, as investors braced for earnings from some of Wall Street’s biggest technology companies in the coming week. The S&P 500 Index rose 0.4% to notch its fifth-straight all-time high and its fourth week of gains in the last five. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index rose 0.2%, also closing at a record.

Asian equities were under pressure on Monday, with Japanese and Korean shares declining. Investors are bracing for a busy week of data, including meetings of the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan.

The Indian rupee closed 11 paise weaker at 86.52 against the US dollar on Friday, slipping from Thursday’s close of 86.41, as a combination of global and domestic pressures weighed on the currency. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond settled two basis points higher at 6.35%.
