Mountain View, California is where Google usually displays its tech arsenal — the Google I/O annual developer conference held in May is when the tech giant makes its major announces and updates.
The year 2025, though, promises to be different, if one goes by Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai’s email to Googlers, which dropped on Jan. 8.
“As we start the year, I have been reviewing demos for the products and features we’re rolling out in the next few months. The progress is amazing, and I’m confident we will keep the momentum going in 2025,” he wrote.
Pichai seems ready to lock and load, and not wait until May to fire. As he himself explains in the same email to employees, saying, “At the Strategy Meeting, we talked about the urgency of this moment, how rapidly technology is evolving, and our opportunity to reimagine our products and processes for a new era.”
If anyone understands how quickly the world of tech, powered by AI, is changing, it is Pichai. With its various products and feature upgrades last year, Google is firmly in the race for the top spot as far as AI platforms and products go.
For starters, the Google Pixel is expected to get a huge upgrade with powerful hardware, Android 16 that is expected to pump major iron and accessories that could put Apple to shame.
NDTV Profit has reliably learnt that Google will invest large sums in developing quantum AI – a supercomputer that is capable of solving complex error-corrected problems. Google is also invested in developing AI education initiatives for schools across the world. It is also expected to unveil truly transformative technologies in the field of healthcare in India.
One exciting product that could be released soon is Daily Listen. This is a powerful personalised feature which is currently being tested in Search Labs. What Daily Listen does is that it creates daily 5-minute audio overviews of topics you are interested in. How does it know what you are interested in? Easy – your Google Search and Discover activity history helps Google understand your preferences. Daily Listen will also offer a transcript, a sectioned playback and related stories for you to read. Right now, users in the US can enable this in Search Labs for Android and iOS.
Here’s a quick look at what Google unleashed in December 2024:
Under the AI bucket:
Gemini 2.0: Next-gen AI model for the "agentic era" with improved multimodality, tool use and world understanding.
Deep Research: Gemini Advanced feature for research assistance using advanced reasoning and long context.
Gemini 2.0 Flash: High-performance, fast workhorse model available via the Gemini API.
In hardware:
Trillium TPU: Sixth-generation TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) for AI workloads with improved training, inference, and energy efficiency. This was used to train Gemini 2.0.
Willow Quantum Chip: Demonstrated error correction and performed a complex computation in under five minutes that would take a supercomputer 10 septillion years.
In the extended reality world:
Android XR: New platform for headsets and glasses with AI assistance, launching first on headsets – nicknamed Project Moohan.
Integration with Google Apps: YouTube, Google Maps being reimagined for headsets.
In the enterprise space:
Google Agentspace: Brings together Gemini, search, and enterprise data for multimodal search and task completion.
NotebookLM Updates: New interface, audio interactivity, and premium version called NotebookLM Plus.
Under the creative AI bucket:
Veo 2 and Imagen 3: New versions of video and image generation models.
Whisk: Tool for generating images using other images as input.
The world is waiting to see what Google and Sundar Pichai will launch in the coming months. 2025 is all set to be a big bang year for the tech giant.
