The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and other coastal districts of Maharashtra for the next few days. The alert has been issued in anticipation of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph at isolated locations.
According to the IMD’s latest five-day forecast released on May 5, Mumbai is likely to receive light to moderate thunder showers on Monday, followed by moderate rainfall and strong winds over the next two days. The weather conditions are expected to improve by Thursday, with light rain anticipated in the city.
Rainfall Prediction For Western States By IMD:
The anticipated weather conditions are forming due to the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation in the region, the IMD said in its national weather bulletin released on Monday morning.
The weather agency predicted that Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions may continue to experience hailstorms, thunderstorms, and moderate to heavy rainfall till May 8-9. Hence, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and other coastal and north-west districts of Maharashtra have also been put on yellow alert till Thursday.
Some districts of Maharashtra have also been placed on an orange alert today. These include Chandrapur, Washim, Yavatmal, Buldana, Bhandara and Gondia.
“Thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds (speed reaching 50–60 kmph) are very likely in isolated places,” the IMD said.
