Stock Market At Closing

  • The benchmark equity indices ended holiday-shortened week lower on Thursday, with Nifty extending the fall for the second day and Sensex extending its decline for the fourth day.

  • Intraday, both Nifty and Sensex had fallen nearly 0.40%.

  • Nifty ends 73.30 points or 0.33% lower at 22,397.20

  • Sensex ends 200.85 points or 0.27% down at 73,828.91.

  • Broader indices also closed lower. Nifty Midcap 150 ended 0.62% lower; Nifty Smallcap 250 closed 0.69% lower.

  • Most sectoral indices fell with Nifty Realty leading the decline. Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Bank were the only sectors to end in green.

  • The market breadth was skewed in the favour of sellers, as 2,448 stocks declined, 1,529 advanced and 128 remained unchanged on the BSE.

  • ICICI Bank, SBI, Bharat Electronics, Sun Pharma and Power Grid Corp. emerged as the top gainers for the day.

  • On the other hand, Reliance Industries, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Tata Motors and Bharti Airtel were the worst performers of the Nifty 50 index.

Stock Market Live: Cement Stocks Extend Decline

The decline in the cement stocks were led by Ramco Cements. This comes after the Tamil Nadu government's imposition of additional mineral tax of Rs 160 per tonne on limestone mined in the state. Given limestone is a key raw material in cement production, this additional mineral tax will drive the cost of production for cement makers higher, according to Citi.

The tax, which came into effect from Feb. 20, follows the Supreme Court's decision last year, which allowed state governments to impose additional tax or royalties on minerals mined in the state.
