Microsoft will shut down Skype on May 5, ending support for the long-running communication platform. The company is directing users to migrate to Microsoft Teams for free, which retains access to chats and contacts through the same login credentials.

Skype Numbers Remain Active Until Billing Expiry

Skype Number subscriptions will continue to work until the end of each user’s current billing period. After the shutdown date, users with valid subscriptions can still receive calls via the Skype web portal or through Microsoft Teams for free.

Calls made to a Skype Number will only ring on the web portal if the browser is open. On Teams, calls will trigger push notifications, functioning similarly to the Skype app.

Microsoft has also confirmed that users can port their Skype Numbers to other service providers. This must be initiated directly with the new carrier.

Skype Credit Remains Usable For Now

Skype Credit will continue to work after 5 May 2025, but only on the Skype web portal and Microsoft Teams. These platforms will allow outbound calls using the Skype Dial Pad, provided the user has remaining credit. However, purchasing new Skype Credit or using auto-recharge features was disabled from April 3.

Data Export And Service Shutdown Details

For users choosing not to switch to Teams, Microsoft allows chat and contact data to be exported manually. This provides a way to retain records from past conversations and preserve contact lists.

Several features will stop working from May 5. These include SMS functionality, call forwarding, caller ID setup, and the ability to gift Skype Credit to others.

The retirement of Skype marks the end of a widely-used communication tool, with Microsoft integrating similar features into its modern Teams platform.
