After alerting Pixel 6a users of a serious battery overheating issue in June, Google is rolling out a mandatory automatic software update to Android 16 on Tuesday.

All Pixel 6a devices will receive this update, "but only Impacted Devices will receive the battery management features", Google said, as part of a Pixel 6a battery performance programme.

How Is Google Resolving Pixel 6a Battery Overheating Issue?

Google had earlier found that specific Pixel 6a phones ("Impacted Devices") need a compulsory software update to minimise the chance of battery overheating, which could be potentially dangerous for users.

The update will activate crucial battery management functions that will lower battery capacity and charging performance on impacted devices once the battery has completed 400 charge cycles.

Certain users will experience changes earlier than others since the battery management functionalities will only activate once an impacted device has completed 400 charge cycles, Google added.

Will All Pixel 6a Phones Get Affected?

According to Google, not every Pixel 6a device is affected by the decrease in battery capacity and charging performance. "If your device is not impacted, your battery management features will remain the same as before, and you will not be eligible for these support options under this programme", Google said.

Free Battery Replacement, Other Support For Pixel 6a Users

If a user’s Pixel 6a is determined as an Impacted Device, they may be eligible for a battery replacement for free. The facility will be available at walk-in repair centres across various countries, including India.

Google will alternatively offer cash or Google hardware discount codes to users if battery replacement is not available in their country, not convenient, or they would like another option.

Eligible devices will undergo physical inspection "to verify that the phone is in suitable condition for repair", Google said.

Users can go to Google’s support page to determine if their Pixel 6a is eligible for free repair/replacement, cash payment or hardware discount credit.
