Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to feature a revamped rear panel design, according to newly surfaced dummy unit images. The leaked images, shared on X by tipster Sonny Dickson, suggest that Apple is making major changes to the Pro models while the standard iPhone 17 may retain its predecessor’s design.
The iPhone 16 Plus is also speculated to be replaced by a new model, dubbed the iPhone 17 Air.
The leaked image supports earlier reports that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will adopt a glass-aluminium rear panel. According to the leak, the glass section is expected to cover the lower half of the device, including the MagSafe area, while the aluminium frame may encircle this section and extend around the expanded camera module at the top.
The images align with earlier reports suggesting that Apple is shifting towards a new material approach for its flagship Pro models. The Pro variants are also expected to feature an improved camera system, housed in a larger camera island, compared to previous iterations. In addition to the redesigned rear panel, the images shared by Dickson provide a glimpse of the overall dimensions of the iPhone 17 series.
The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro are reported to share a 6.3-inch display. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to be the largest model in the lineup. The iPhone 17 Air, which is reportedly replacing the iPhone 16 Plus, appears to be designed as Apple's slimmest device yet, featuring a single rear camera.
While the Pro models are set to undergo visible design changes, the standard iPhone 17 may not see significant aesthetic changes. It seems to be the only model in the lineup to retain a vertical camera arrangement.
A few days ago, another leak by Dickson gave a detailed glimpse of the iPhone 17 Air, showing its thin design. The leak included images of non-functional dummy units used by case and accessory manufacturers. Dickson’s images showed the dummy units from multiple angles, offering a closer look at Apple’s new design direction.
As anticipation builds, more leaks and reports will likely shed further light on the upcoming iPhone lineup. Apple's official announcement will ultimately confirm whether these design changes make it to the final production models.
