After Bloomberg tech expert Mark Gurman’s claim that iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027 will see a “major shake-up” and a "bold new Pro model," a new report notes that one of the 20th anniversary iPhone models will boast a major display upgrade.
As per a recent article from The Information, which cited insiders familiar with Apple's plans, one of the 2027 iPhone models will pack a "truly edge-to-edge display" to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first iPhone.
iPhone 19 Could Pack Under-Display Camera
Apple’s former design head Jony Ive's had the original vision of a full-screen design for the iPhone, and it looks like Apple is working to realise that. In order to make the edge-to-edge display a reality, the company intends to conceal the front-facing camera beneath the screen. In this manner, the display can run the whole length of the device without being interrupted by bezels or cutouts.
Gurman had earlier noted that Apple’s “bold new Pro model” will make more extensive use of glass, making the device “appear like a single sheet of glass.” Since Apple reserves the biggest of design modification for its top-end devices, the edge-to-edge display might well feature only in the iPhone 19’s Pro model.
iPhone 18 As Springboard For Design Changes
Before the 20th anniversary iPhone, however, Apple intends to use the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as a springboard for the bigger design changes. The phones will reportedly replace the existing pill-shaped cutout at the top with a tiny pinhole—which will pack the front camera and Face ID—in the top-left corner.
Notably, Gurman back in March had also said Apple intended to further reduce the pill-shaped cutout by shifting some of the Dynamic Island technology beneath the iPhone screen.
Rumour also had it that the iPhone 16 Pro would be the first phone to include under-display Face ID. However, that was not to be, and latest reports indicate that this design change won’t surface until 2026. Even before that, since the launch of iPhone 14 Pro, there have been speculations of an under-display camera.
Looks like it will all shape up for the 20th anniversary special.
