Mumbai Rains LIVE Updates: Monorail Breaks Down Due To Over Crowding, MMRDA
"A preliminary investigation revealed that due to overcrowding, the total weight of the monorail had risen to about 109 metric tons, which exceeded its original design capacity of 104 tons. This excess weight caused a mechanical disconnection between the power rail and the current collector, leading to disruption of the power supply essential for the monorail’s operation. As a result, the monorail came to a halt," said MMRDA in a statement.
The train services on the Harbour Line of Indian Railways were completely suspended, leading to over crowding.

A mini rain stay-cation is on cards for students in Maharashtra as the Panvel Municipal Corporation declared an off for schools and colleges for Wednesday. Civic body wrote in a post on X, "In the backdrop of heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges within the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation."

"The monorail broke down around 6:15 p.m. between Chembur and Bhakti Park. In the emergency situation, passengers immediately contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s helpline number 1916 for assistance. Responding promptly, the Mumbai Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and began rescue operations with the help of three snorkel vehicles.", BMC stated.

In the last four days pumping stations across the city have pumped out a total of 1,645.155 crore litres of water, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
"Comparatively, the amount of water pumped out in the last 4 days exceeds twice the water storage capacity of Tansa Lake, which has a capacity of 804.6 crore liters."

Several parts of Mumbai received more than 200 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs reporting the highest downpour at 255.5 mm, the the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, the Santacruz observatory recorded 238.2 mm rainfall, while the Colaba observatory logged 110.4 mm rain, it said.
