At minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, Leh was the coldest place in India on Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department, Jammu and Kashmir, known for its high altitudes and mountains, is experiencing intense cold weather, with temperatures dipping in the negatives in most places.
“Minimum Temperature (< 0° C) over the hills of the country (16-12-2024),” the IMD said in a post on X.
The temperatures were low in the plains of India as well. At 0.6 degrees Celsius, Hissar in Haryana was the coldest place among the plains on Monday, followed by Churu in East Rajasthan and Amritsar in Punjab.

IMD Predicts Cold Waves In Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan
The IMD warned of cold wave to severe cold wave conditions in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh on Dec. 16, and in isolated pockets of East Rajasthan from Dec. 17 to Dec. 20.
Cold wave conditions are very likely between Dec. 16 and Dec. 19 in isolated pockets over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Rajasthan.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience a cold wave on Dec. 16.
IMD also predicted cold wave conditions in Uttarakhand between Dec, 16 and Dec.19 and East Rajasthan on Dec. 16, Dec. 21 Dec. 22.
“Minimum temperatures are in the range of 4-8°C in the plains of Northwest India, in many parts of Central India and in the range of 8-14°C in many parts of East and Western India. Minimum temperatures have fallen by 1-2°C over most parts of the country in the past 24 hours,” the IMD further said.
Delhi Wakes Up To Chilly Morning
Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to another cold morning on Monday, with temperatures dropping to 4.5 degrees Celsius at the Safdarjung weather station. Temperatures in certain areas went below that, with Ayanagar recording 4 degrees Celsius. The IMD predicted mainly clear skies for Monday and the days ahead, with some shallow smog likely in the morning.
