The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts for the next few days, anticipating moderate to heavy rainfall. On May 20, all three regions are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong winds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph at isolated places.
On the other hand, the weather agency has also issued an orange alert for other districts of Maharashtra for this week.
According to the IMD, from May 21 to 23, weather conditions are expected to intensify, with heavy rainfall and stronger winds between 50 and 60 kmph at isolated locations across the three districts. Residents are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions during this period, the weather agency said.
Raigad is also expected to witness intense conditions over the next few days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for May 20, 21 and 23, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rainfall and strong winds in several parts of the district. The alert has been upgraded to orange on May 22, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely, along with thunderstorms and strong winds.
Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts are also bracing for intense rainfall and stormy conditions in the coming days. Ratnagiri is under a yellow alert on May 20, followed by an orange alert from May 21 to 23.
Orange Alert
In Sindhudurg, an orange alert has been issued for May 20, 21, and 22, with expectations of heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds. The intensity is likely to reduce slightly on May 23, for which a yellow alert has been issued. However, heavy rainfall is still expected at a few places.
The districts of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Nashik are also under a yellow alert, with the IMD forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds.
Pune has been placed under an orange alert for May 20, followed by a yellow alert till May 23, with thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (50–60 kmph) expected at isolated locations throughout the period.
Kolhapur is under an orange alert on May 20 and 21, shifting to yellow on May 22, followed by moderate rainfall on May 23. Satara and Sangli face similar patterns with orange alerts on May 20, yellow on May 21 and 22, and moderate rain from May 23 onwards. Solapur has been put under orange alerts on May 20 and 21. Jalna is on yellow alert from May 20 to 22, with moderate to light rain on May 23, while the weather agency has issued yellow alerts on May 20 and 22, and an orange alert on May 21 for the Beed district.
With multiple districts across Maharashtra under yellow and orange alerts, the IMD’s forecasts underline the need for caution. Residents are urged to stay updated with weather advisories and follow local authority instructions to stay safe.
