The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday sounded alerts for heavy rainfall and intense cold wave in different parts of the country. A well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar and its neighbourhood is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards South Tamil Nadu and weaken gradually during the next 12 hours, the IMD said.
“A western disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies lies roughly along Long. 70°E to the north of Lat. 33°N,” it said in the latest bulletin.
Heavy Rainfall Predictions In South India
The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall on Dec. 12 at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Isolated heavy rainfall is also very likely in these areas on Dec. 13, 16 and 17.
Kerala and Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema are also very likely to witness heavy rainfall at isolated places on Dec. 12. A heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for south interior Karnataka on Dec. 12.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands may see heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely on Dec. 13 and 14.
Cold Wave Alerts For North India
While south India will see rains over the next few days, the IMD predicted cold wave conditions across states in North and West India.
The weather department said that cold wave conditions are very likely over Delhi on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 in Delhi. The Saurashtra and Kutch regions are also likely to experience a cold wave on Dec. 12.
Cold wave warnings have also been issued for Dec. 12 to Dec. 16 in isolated pockets over Rajasthan, some places in Punjab and isolated pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad are also likely to experience cold wave conditions from Dec. 13 to Dec. 16.
Delhi Wakes Up To Coldest Morning Of Season
Residents of Delhi on Thursday woke up to the coldest morning of the season on Thursday as temperatures dropped to 4.5 degrees Celsius on the day. As per IMD data at 8:30 am, the Safdarjung station recorded a minimum temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures in other stations were even lower, with Pusa recording 3.2 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar recording 3.8 degrees Celsius and Lodhi Road recording 4.4 degrees Celsius.
The IMD predicted a further drop in the temperatures on Friday and Saturday, with minimum temperatures expected to go down to 4 degrees Celsius in the national capital. It further predicted mainly clear skies in the mornings, with fog and mist likely in the evening and night.
