This year, the 10th day of Muharram, Ashura, was observed on July 6. As it was on a Sunday, there will be no separate public holiday. So, on July 7, banks, government offices, post offices, schools and other public institutions will remain open.
Since there is no public holiday on July 7, stock markets will remain open and continue business as usual.
This year, a total of 14 stock market holidays have been designated. The last market weekday holiday was observed on May 1, on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. The next stock market weekday holiday is set to be observed on August 15, marking Independence Day.
Apart from the public holidays, stock markets also remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays.
Muharram 2025
Muharram is considered the second-holiest month in Islamic traditions after Ramadan. Muharram, which marks the beginning of the New Year as per the Islamic Hijri calendar, started on Jun 27.
The holy month symbolises sacrifice, unity, peace and harmony. It’s time to abide by the virtues of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
In Islam, Muharram is one of the four sacred months, which means “forbidden”. During this period, warfare is forbidden and Muslims engage in increased worship.
The 10th day of Muharram, Ashura, is observed by Shia Muslims as a day of mourning. They take out processions and engage in self-flagellation, remembering the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain. On the other hand, Sunni Muslims observe fast and offer prayers on this day.
