As Apple’s iPhone lineup continues to grow more diverse, choosing the right model can be a daunting task. Apple’s current offerings cater to a wide range of users — from budget-conscious buyers to those seeking cutting-edge features.
Let’s take a look at the new iPhone models and how they work for different users, as recently tested by CNET.
iPhone 16 And iPhone 16 Plus
The standout choice for most consumers, as per the CNET report, is the iPhone 16, starting at $799 (around Rs 68,200). The line-up is available in two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, which is the iPhone 16 Plus, priced at $899 (around Rs 76,800). These models reportedly strike the perfect balance between performance, features and price.
These phones introduce a new 12MP ultrawide camera that improves low-light photography and even allows for macro shots. Both devices feature Apple Intelligence capabilities, including tools to summarise messages and webpages, remove visual clutter from images and assist with writing.
Users also get a customisable Action button, which can be set for tasks such as turning on the torch or activating a specific Focus mode. Another feature is the Camera Control button, which enables real-time adjustments to zoom, aperture and image style. It also supports a function called Visual Intelligence, providing contextual information about the camera’s subject.
Despite lacking an always-on display and no faster wired charging, CNET highlights the iPhone 16 series for delivering about 90% of the Pro models’ features at a much lower price. For anyone with an iPhone 13 or older device, this model could be an upgrade option.
iPhone 16 Pro And Pro Max
CNET notes that those looking for Apple’s most premium smartphone experience should consider the iPhone 16 Pro, priced at $999 (around Rs 85,300), or the iPhone 16 Pro Max. These devices feature larger screens (6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively), thinner bezels and are equipped with high-end cameras, including 5x optical zoom.
Both models run iOS 18 and have Apple Intelligence tools, along with improvements like 4K slow-motion video and an Audio Mix feature for content creators. But they do come with some trade-offs — only 128GB of base storage, a less colourful aesthetic and a Camera Control button placement that’s not ideal for one-handed use.
According to CNET, those upgrading from an iPhone 12 Pro or older will find significant value here. Users of more recent Pro models (such as iPhone 14 Pro or 15 Pro) may not find enough new features to justify the expense.
iPhone 16E
For those seeking an affordable entry into Apple’s ecosystem, CNET suggests the iPhone 16E, priced at $599 (around Rs 51,100). While not exactly cheap by budget phone standards, this device combines elements from earlier models — its design echoes the iPhone 14, but it uses the same A18 chip as the iPhone 16.
It omits certain premium features such as MagSafe and an ultrawide lens, but offers solid day-long battery life. It also has a dependable single-lens rear camera and strong overall performance. This model is best suited for those using older iPhones (like the SE or iPhone 11) or Android users looking to switch platforms without making a steep investment.
iPhone 15
With the iPhone 16 series now launched, Apple has reduced the price of the iPhone 15 to $699 (around Rs 60,000). It remains a viable option, especially with its Dynamic Island display, USB-C port and A16 Bionic chip.
Available in standard and Plus variants (6.1-inch and 6.7-inch, respectively), the iPhone 15 also includes the second-generation ultra-wideband chip, which helps locate nearby friends and family with greater accuracy. Though lacking Apple Intelligence and an always-on display, the discounted price makes this a good offer for those upgrading from significantly older models.
According to the CNET report, the iPhone 16 emerged as the best all-around choice. But ultimately, the best iPhone for you will depend on your individual needs and budget.
