8 Players Who Retired After T20 World Cup 2024

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and David Warner are among these eight players who played the final T20 international of their career in the recently concluded World Cup.

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024: India was crowned the T20 World Cup Champions on June 29 after a thrilling 7-run win over South Africa in the competition's finals.

In doing so, India ended their 13-year wait for an ICC Trophy. This was India's second triumph at the T20 stage after winning the inaugural T20 World Cup edition in 2007.

The end of the 2024 T20 World Cup also brought down the curtains on the remarkable careers of some top international players who played their last T20 World Cup as well as the last T20I match during this tournament.

Below is the list of players who announced retirement from T20I after the T20 World Cup 2024.

1. Virat Kohli

One of India's greatest batsman, Virat Kohli signed off from T20I cricket in the best way possible after securing the 'Man of the Match' award for playing a huge role in India's victory over South Africa. Kohli will continue to play in ODIs and Tests for India and will also continue to play the IPL.

Kohli made his T20I debut at the age of 20 against Zimbabwe during the 2010 series held in the African nation. Virat Kohli will end his career as the 2nd highest run scorer in T20I behind his compatriot Rohit Sharma.

2. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma became the 2nd Indian captain to lift the T20 World Cup trophy and marked his exit from the format by leading the only undefeated team in the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit announced his retirement from the T20 format during the post-match press conference after the finals.

He made the most of the opportunity he got during his second match against South Africa in which he won the 'Man of the Match' award for scoring a quick-fire 50 off just 40 balls.

Sharma ended his career as the highest run scorer in T20I.

3. Ravindra Jadeja

One of India's specialist all-rounders and one of world's finest fielder, Jadeja announced his retirement from the T20 format after winning T20 World Cup 2024.

  • Best Bowling Figures: 3/15 against Scotland in the 2021 T20 World Cup held in Dubai.

Jadeja made his T20 debut on Feb 10, 2009, against Sri Lanka in the sole T20 match held at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

4. David Warner

Australia legend David Warner's international retirement was confirmed after the team's T20 World Cup 2024 exit during the Super 8 stage. The Australian swashbuckling opener had already confirmed that the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies will be his last in the Australian shirt.

New Zealand pace-swing bowler Trent Boult announced his retirement from international cricket after their disappointing T20 World Cup campaign which saw them getting knocked out in the group stage of the competition.

6. David Wiese

Namibia's star all-rounder, David Wiese called a time on his international cricket career after their final T20 World Cup 2024 group stage match against England. The Namibian all-rounder made his T20I debut in Aug 2013 against Sri Lanka when he was part of the South African side. Wiese made his debut for Namibia in the first round of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

7. Sybrand Engelbrecht

The 35-year-old middle-order batsman announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. He made his T20I debut in Feb 2024 against Nepal during the Nepal T20I Tri-Series 2024.

Born in South Africa, Engelbrecht shifted to Netherlands to focus on his career outside cricket but was later called up by the Netherlands national cricket team when they qualified for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

8. Brian Masaba

Brian Masaba stepped down as T20I captain of Uganda's national cricket team and also retired from the T20 format after the Cricket Cranes faced a group-stage exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Uganda, part of Group C registered their first win of the campaign by defeating Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets.
