Devendra Fadnavis has been proposed to take office as the 21st chief minister of Maharashtra in a grand ceremony on Dec. 5, with several prominent political leaders and dignitaries.
The BJP core committee, in a meeting with Nirmala Sitharaman and Vijay Rupani as observers, selected Fadnavis as the legislative party head.
Fadnavis and Shinde met Governor CP Radhakrishnan to stake claim to form the next government in the state, accompanied by Mahayuti MLAs. This will be the former's second stint as the chief minister.
Shiv Sena Shinde faction head and ex-Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde is set to swear in as a Deputy CM, alongside Nationalist Congress Party chief Ajit Pawar, thus appointing all Mahayuti stalwarts in major positions in the Maharashtra government, as per PTI sources.
Aditi Fadnis, contributing editor at Business Standard, noted that power is indubitably in the hands of the BJP, and the feelings of the alliance partners in the Mahayuti is practically irrelevant.
Maharashtra is overburdened by a massive debt of around Rs 8 lakh crore, which had contributed to the schemes which led to the success of the Mahayuti, she pointed out.
However, "whatever you may say about Devendra Fadnavis' politics, his administrative acumen can’t be questioned", she told NDTV Profit.
Financial burdens in the state have been a significant deterrent for companies, contributing to an exodus of industries to other states, she added, stating that there's hope that this issue may be addressed.
The Mahayuti Alliance defeated the Maha Vikas Aghadi by winning 235 seats in the recently held Assembly polls. The BJP won 132 seats, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena bagged 57 and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party secured 41.
As part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) secured 20 seats, Indian National Congress won 16 seats and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) obtained 10 seats. The Samajwadi Party won two seats.
