Revised ITR Filing Deadline: Check Extended Date To File Belated Income Tax Returns

The Central Board of Direct Taxes on Dec. 31, 2024 extended the last date for filing belated and revised income tax returns for accounting year 2024-25. This change is applicable in the case of resident individuals. The circular provides interim relief for tax payers to file their income tax returns. The earlier deadline had been set for Dec. 31, 2024. The extension has been made till Jan. 15, 2025.

This extended deadline has allowed taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns through the first two weeks of 2025 as well. ITR can be filed online by logging on to the e-Filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.

One can log in using the user ID which is the individual's PAN or Aadhaar, and password. After logging in, one needs to navigate to the Income Tax Returns section and choose the year and mode of filing. Here, one can start a fresh filing or resume their filing. The individual can then fill the options applicable

If you are not sure which ITR form you need to file, the first option is to look up and understand the ITR form number that is supposed to be filed. Another option is to click on the 'Proceed' button below the 'Help me decide which ITR Form to file' option. This will get the wizard-based system to help the user decide which ITR forms need to be filled. Then you can proceed with one ITR filing.

As per the latest statistics shared by the Income Tax Department, over 5 crore ITRs have been filed till July 26, 2024. This marks over 8.5% increase against the previous year. The number of ITRs filed per day has exceeded over 25 lakh since last year. The 5 crore milestone, which was reached on July 26 this year, was achieved on July 27 last year.

Every individual who has missed filling their ITR can now file their income tax returns on the income tax e-filing portal before Jan. 15. The tax liabilities and tax returns will be calculated as per the Income Tax Act, 1961, the income tax slab that you fall under and other variables.
