Modi Applauds Coldplay, Calls For Focus On Concert Economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the huge success of Coldplay in Mumbai and Ahmedabad is a testament to the massive potential India has for live performances.

Coldplay recently made waves in India with five concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The British band added an extra layer of excitement by live-streaming their final performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Republic Day.

"You must have seen the fabulous images from the Coldplay concert in Mumbai and Ahmedabad," Modi said in a message during the Utkarsh Odisha - Make in Odisha Conclave 2025. "It's a testament to the massive potential India has for live performances."

"Big international artists are increasingly drawn to India... I urge both the government and private sectors to invest in the required infrastructure and skills," the prime minister said.

Coldplay kicked off their Indian tour on Jan. 18 in Mumbai, with additional performances on Jan. 19 and 21. Their final concerts in Ahmedabad on Jan. 25–26 set a new record, drawing an impressive 2.5 lakh attendees, including 1.7 lakh visitors from outside Gujarat.

With more than 1.34 lakh people at the Narendra Modi Stadium for the final performance, Coldplay's show became the largest-ever concert in India, surpassing previous attendance records set by superstars like Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and even Michael Jackson.

The concerts were a huge hit, capturing the attention of audiences far and wide. Throughout the concert, Coldplay not only delivered their chart-topping hits but also engaged with the crowd in a tribute to India, by performing patriotic songs like Maa Tujhe Salaam and Vande Mataram.
