India will neither bow down nor threaten others but will engage with the world with confidence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday. He said India’s global stance is based on dignity, self-respect, and mutual respect, following the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the belief that the world is one family.

Modi, who discussed his approach to foreign policy, governance, and personal philosophy in a conversation with Lex Fridman, said he never felt deprived despite growing up in poverty. He recalled receiving white canvas shoes from his uncle and keeping them polished with discarded chalk from school. He said he embraced every phase of life with gratitude rather than seeing poverty as a struggle.

Speaking about his influences, Modi said Swami Vivekananda’s teachings shaped his views on selfless service. He narrated a story where Vivekananda, seeking help for his ill mother, was advised to pray to Devi Kali. That incident, Modi said, led Vivekananda to realise that true devotion lies in serving humanity. Modi also spoke about his bond with Swami Atmasthananda, who guided him towards public service.

On his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi said it was his privilege to be part of the organisation. He highlighted RSS’s role in providing education and healthcare and contrasted its labour union’s approach with leftist unions, saying RSS encourages workers to unite the world rather than just themselves.

Discussing his relationship with former US President Donald Trump, Modi recalled Trump’s gesture at the Howdy Modi event, where he joined him in greeting the audience. Modi said Trump’s “America First” approach aligns with his “Bharat First” policy, creating a natural synergy. Responding to Trump calling him a tough negotiator, Modi said he prioritises India’s interests while ensuring no harm to others.

On governance, Modi said his administration removed 10 crore fake beneficiaries from welfare schemes through Direct Benefit Transfer, saving Rs 3 lakh crore. He also mentioned scrapping 1,500 obsolete laws and over 45,000 compliances to streamline governance. He emphasised that his government does not engage in vote-bank politics but follows the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.”

Modi also addressed the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying a false narrative was spread about the events. He said Gujarat had seen over 250 riots before 2002, but none since. He stated that courts cleared his name and that his government focuses on inclusive development.

On India’s relations with China, Modi said differences exist, but efforts are made to prevent disputes. He described the 21st century as the century of Asia, stressing that strong India-China ties are important for global stability.

Modi also spoke about his leadership approach, saying he evaluates himself on three principles: never backing down from hard work, never acting with wrong intent, and never working for personal gain. He said true leadership involves taking responsibility and making decisions in the country’s best interest without hesitation.

When asked if he fears death, Modi said he does not and instead focuses on making life meaningful. He said his motivation comes from serving 140 crore Indians, and he considers public service his devotion.
