The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for several parts of Kerala and Karnataka over the next few days. In its latest weather bulletin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, the weather agency predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala and Karnataka from May 23 to May 29.
“Fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Kerala, Karnataka during May 23-29,” the weather agency said.
Earlier, the weather forecaster warned about extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka during May 24-27. Several areas of Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive heavy rain on May 25 and May 26.
As heavy downpour continued to affect normal life in the southern state, the IMD on Friday issued an orange alert for at least six districts of Kerala, including Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
The reason behind the pre-monsoon showers is the formation of a well-marked low-pressure area over east-central Arabian Sea off the south Konkan coast on Friday morning. It is expected to move northwards and intensify further into a depression, IMD stated.
The weather agency also outlined that the conditions are likely to become favourable for Monsoon onset over Kerala during the next two days.
Southern states to face heavy rain this week
Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Kerala and Mahe from May 24 to May 26 and coastal Karnataka between May 24 and 27.

Heavy rains are also predicted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Telangana from May 23 to May 27 and coastal Andhra Pradesh on May 27, the IMD said.

Moreover, thundersquall with winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph is very likely at isolated places over states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
