Foreign institutional investors ended their 12-session selling streak in the cash market on Thursday. They turned net buyers in cash market, index futures and stock futures, while they were net sellers in the stock options and index options.

FIIs In Cash Market

Foreign portfolio investors snapped a 12-session selling streak on Thursday and bought stocks worth approximately Rs 1,506.8 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Domestic institutional investors have been buyers for 12 consecutive sessions and bought stocks worth Rs 22.1 crore.

The FPIs bought stocks worth Rs 2,382.6 crore on Wednesday. So far in January 2025, FPIs have sold stakes worth Rs 5,949 crore, according to the National Securities Depository Ltd.

Overseas investors have been net sellers and have collectively offloaded stocks worth Rs 7,292.3 crore, according to data from NSDL compiled by NDTV Profit.

On the other hand, domestic institutional investors stayed net buyers through the year and bought stocks worth Rs 5.32 lakh crore.

However, according to data from the National Securities Depository Ltd., which is updated till the previous trading day, foreign institutions have been net buyers of Rs 427 crore worth of Indian equities so far in 2024.

In November the foreign investors sold shares worth Rs 14,465.04 crore, NSDL data showed.

FIIs In Futures And Options

Ahead of the Jan. 25 expiry, the value of outstanding positions—also called open interest in the derivatives segment—has increased for the FIIs in the Nifty futures. The FIIs' long-to-short ratio in index futures remains at 20%:80%.

The FIIs sold index options worth Rs 23,558 crore and stock options worth Rs 944.8 crore while they bought index futures worth Rs 1,871 crore and stock futures worth Rs 11,608 crore.

FII Contract Value

The value of the total Nifty 50 futures open interest in the market decreased Rs 1,543 crore at the end of January expiry from Rs 31,713 crore a day earlier to Rs 30,170 crore.

F&O Cues

The Nifty January futures were up by 1.56% to 24,270 at a premium of 82 points, with the open interest down by 6.4%.

The open interest distribution for the Nifty 50 Jan. 9 expiry series indicated most activity at 26,500 call strikes, with the 21,850 put strikes having maximum open interest.

Long-Short Ratio

The total long-short ratio for foreign investors fell at 1.36 from 1.45 in the previous session.
