Stock Market Highlights: Nifty, Sensex End Volatile Week With Minor Losses On Global Trade War Standoff

The benchmark equity indices reversed its single-session decline on Friday as the trade war between US and China intensified. However, the NSE Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex ended the week in red for the second consecutive week with minor losses following a temporary pause in US trade tariffs.

The Nifty ended 429.40 points or 1.92% higher at 22,828.55, while the BSE Sensex closed 1,310.11 points or 1.77% up at 75,157.26 after witnessing a volatile week.

During the day, the Nifty rose 2.34% to 22,923.90, while Sensex gained 2.19% to 75,467.33.

The rally was partly a catch-up move, as domestic markets had remained shut on Thursday for Mahavir Jayanti, missing out on a sharp rebound seen in Asian markets a day earlier.

Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and ICICI Bank Ltd. weighed on the Nifty 50.

This week, the Nifty shed 0.27%, dragged by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Airtel and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. The Sensex lost 0.28%.

On the NSE, all the 15 sectors rose, with the Nifty Metal and Energy leading the gains.

For the week, the Nifty Auto emerged as the top sectoral loser falling for the third consecutive week. Nifty Realty, Nity Metal, Nifty Pharma also extended their decline for the third week. While Nifty IT fell for the second week, Nifty PSU Bank snapped its three-week gaining streak to end in red.

The Nifty FMCG was the top performing sector in this week, posting its longest gaining streak since July 2024. The Nifty Bank fell for the second week in a row and closed near its 200-day moving average.

The Nifty Midcap 150 fell 0.33% for the week, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 gained 0.04%, outperforming the benchmarks.

The broader markets ended higher on Friday, with the BSE MidCap ending 1.84% higher and the SmallCap rising 3.04%.

On the BSE, all of 21 sectors advanced with the BSE Metal and Commodities leading the advance.

The market breadth was skewed in favour of the buyers with 3,119 stocks advancing and 116 remaining unchanged on the BSE.
