Indian equity benchmark indices closed higher on Monday. The NSE Nifty 50 ended 111.55 points, or 0.5% higher at 22,508.75, while the BSE Sensex added 341 points or 0.46% to close at 74,169.95. Intraday, Nifty gained 0.8%, while the Sensex jumped 0.74%. Nifty Midcap 150 recorded gains of 0.7% for the day.
On Monday, gains in the Nifty 50 was led by ICICI Bank Ltd., contributing nearly 30 points to the index. This is also followed by Axis Bank Ltd. accounting for 15.21 points. Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., along with Bajaj Finance Ltd. and Infosys Ltd. were top gainers.
The top laggard in the Nifty 50 were Reliance Industries Ltd., dragging the index by about 13.77 points. ITC Ltd., State Bank of India, Larsen & Toubro Ltd., along with Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. also dragged the index significantly.
Seven of the 12 sectors on the NSE fell. Nifty Pharma and Nifty Finance closed in the green, while Nifty Media fell the most.
Nifty Pharma emerged as top sectoral gainer for the day, led by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., Granules India Ltd. and Biocon Ltd.
Further, Nifty Metal snapped its two-day losing streak and Nifty Bank extended gains for the third consecutive day. Nifty IT snapped its five-day losing streak, while Nifty Oil and Gas fell for the second day in a row. Nifty Realty ended in red for the third day in a row and Nifty Media fell for the fifth consecutive day.
