Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to become the next Chief Justice of India, with President Droupadi Murmu clearing his appointment for the top constitutional post.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025," stated a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

Justice Gavai would take charge as the CJI on May 14, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Sanjiv Khanna demits office.

The appointment of Justice Gavai, the senior-most Supreme Court judge, was recommended by CJI Khanna on April 16.

As per laid down procedure, the name of next CJI is recommended by the outgoing chief justice to the central government.

Justice Gavai will have a tenure of six months and he would demit office on December 23 on attaining the age of 65 years.
