US Ambassador To India Sergio Gor Heads To New Delhi For Bilateral Visit

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has embarked on his first visit to New Delhi as envoy, which runs until Oct. 14, to discuss a "wide range of bilateral issues."

Gor will be accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, according to a statement by the US Department of State.

"The United States will continue to work with India to strengthen our strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific region," the statement said.

Gor's visit comes days after he was confirmed as the India envoy pick, even as the US government continued to be in a shutdown since Oct. 1, due to Congress's failure to pass funding legislation for 2026.

Gor and Rigas are expected to hold key bilateral meetings with several ministers and diplomats, as New Delhi hopes for a stable line of communication with Washington amid what's been a turbulent few months so far.

India is still reeling under the impact of US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 50% tariffs, the highest anywhere in the world. Trade talks saw some momentum with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's visit to New York in September, as both sides remain hopeful of meeting the fall deadline (October-November) for the first tranche of the Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US.

Last month, Goyal had said India will expand energy trade with the United States as part of its long-term energy security goals, calling Washington a key partner in shaping the country’s transition strategy.

Speaking at a US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) event in New York, Goyal had underlined that "India is a big importer of energy from across the world, including the US. We expect to increase our trade on energy products with the US in coming years."
