US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was unsure what would make his summit with Vladimir Putin a success but stated he wanted a ceasefire.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said, "I can't tell you that. I don't know. There's nothing set in stone. I want certain things. I want a ceasefire."
"I want to see a ceasefire rapidly... I'm not going to be happy if it's not today," he said, adding that Europe and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would also be involved.
"I want the killing to stop," Trump said in his concluding remarks.

Ahead of the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia's attacks on Ukraine were ongoing and that an attempted assault in the east had failed.
"On the day of the negotiations, they also kill people. And that says a lot," He Zelensky posted on Telegram, adding that the war persists because there is no instruction or sign that Moscow intends to end it.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin's press secretary, told Russian state media that the upcoming summit could take "at least six to seven hours", according to a report by NBC News.
The summit includes a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin, a meeting with both nations' delegations, and a press conference, the report added.

The seven days before the summit involved a series of diplomatic and public actions.
On Aug. 6, US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin for about three hours, with President Donald Trump saying "great" progress was made.
Moscow announced on Aug. 7 that a meeting between Putin and Trump would take place in the coming days.
The following day, Trump confirmed the Aug. 15 meeting on social media, the same day as the deadline he had set for Russia to stop the war or face new sanctions. It remains unclear whether the sanctions may be delayed or cancelled.
On Aug. 11, Trump said both Ukraine and Russia would have to give up land to end the war, telling reporters the summit would be a "feel-out meeting" to see if Putin would make a deal. Moscow stated that its demands for a full Ukrainian withdrawal from regions it controls still stand.
The Kremlin said Putin discussed the summit on August 12 with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has sent more than 10,000 troops to assist Russia's invasion.
On Aug. 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy travelled to Berlin for virtual conferences with European leaders and then with Trump.
Ukraine's allies stated that Trump was willing to support security guarantees for Kyiv but insisted that the transatlantic NATO alliance should not be part of them.
On Aug. 14, Putin suggested that Moscow and Washington could agree to a nuclear arms deal to strengthen peace.
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy met with Keir Starmer in London to build on momentum from talks the day before.
The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled for Aug. 15 in Alaska.
