Grandmaster D Gukesh’s recent victory over Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess has garnered global attention. The 19-year-old grandmaster capitalised on a late blunder by Carlsen in Round 6 to win the match. Now, football club Paris Saint-Germain has given a shoutout to Gukesh, comparing his stunned reaction with their own after the team’s maiden UEFA Champions League title.
PSG, who defeated Inter Milan by an emphatic 5-0 to clinch their first UCL trophy on Saturday, May 31, dropped a photo of Gukesh looking surprised after his win over Carlsen. The grandmaster was momentarily frozen after the match and walked around trying to process his victory.
The account of Norway Chess responded to the comment with a string of grinning faces with sweat emojis.
Gukesh Wins Against Magnus Carlsen
With his victory, D Gukesh became the second Indian after R Praggnanandhaa to beat Magnus Carlsen in this tournament. The 34-year-old faltered under the time crunch, which allowed Gukesh to take advantage of the situation. At the end of the game, Carlsen was visibly upset and banged the table to vent his frustration, making the chess pieces fall down. He shook hands with Gukesh before placing the chess pieces back and walked away after patting the winner.
Later on, Carlsen praised his opponent. “I think, like, I remember being that age myself, and sometimes kind of your energy, like fighting qualities, and just the optimism is sometimes, you know, bigger than the quality of your moves,” Carlsen said on Monday.
The 34-year-old also indicated that he might not participate in Norway Chess next season.
As for Gukesh, his string of classical wins was brought to an end by American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. The World Number 2 pressed home the advantage he got with the white pieces to score a ‘very smooth’ win over his 19-year-old opponent, PTI reported. Gukesh had earlier defeated Nakamura in Round 3.
PSG Win Maiden Champions League Title
For PSG, 2025 has been a dream year so far. PSG won their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 tournament this year. With their UCL victory, they are now the second French club to win the Champions League.
In the UCL final, Désiré Doué was one of the biggest stars of the game. The 19-year-old edged out Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal to win the Champions League Young Player of the Season. He scored two goals for PSG in the crucial fixture. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Achraf Hakimi and substitute Senny Mayulu also added their names to the scoresheet.
