Trump Tariffs: Sunny Deol, Madagascar Lead Meme Fest On Social Media

US President Donald Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs on several trade partners, including India, in what he described as an effort for the "liberation" of America.

Blaming trade imbalance for hurting the US economy, Trump said that his latest move would ensure that America's national security priorities are not hurt. He highlighted that several problems in the US economy, including the disruption in local manufacturing, would resolve through the tariff measures.

Subsequently, the 78-year-old imposed extensive reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including 26% on India, 37% on Bangladesh among others. For other countries such as Britain and Ukraine, he also imposed a baseline tariff of 10%. For European Union countries, the measure stands at 20%.

Several people have shared their thoughts on the issue, which is undoubtedly one of the most serious developments of this century. Experts say that Trump’s tariff move is likely to shake the global economy. Of course, memes took over social media and people are having a field day. 

On the 26% tariff on India, a user joked: "Tariff pe tariff", referencing the famous Bollywood dialogue "Tareekh pe tareekh".

In another meme, famous 2005 movie Madagascar's protagonists were also shocked by the US’s decision to impose a 47% tariff on the east African country.

Following the development, some old memes that were aimed at predicting how the global economy would react to this move also resurfaced.  

One such meme suggested that the European Union, which has been subjected to 20% reciprocal tariffs by the US, will now turn towards Chinese markets for its good.

Another meme showed the absurdity of how tariffs on steel can indirectly inflate everyday prices, like cereal.
