Apple is expected to launch a new ultra-thin model along with its iPhone 17 lineup this year. The slimmer version of the latest series, iPhone 17 Air, has caught the attention of tech enthusiasts ahead of the release due to multiple leaks on features and designs.
The handset is likely to follow in the footsteps of the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus, models that didn’t quite take off.
A new leak of the upcoming Apple line has also surfaced. Tipster Sonny Dickson, on X, shared a dummy of the “unbelievably thin” Air model. The four iPhone 17 dummies, placed side by side, reveal the Air model to be nearly half as thick as the other variants.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has highlighted that while some iPhones (like the mini) have struggled to gain popularity, the iPhone Air may be able to hit the mark, Forbes reported.
“The Air line won’t set any sales records and most iPhone fans will still spring for the Pro-level models. But I think the Air will be far more popular and better for Apple’s bottom line than the mini or Plus phones,” Gurman shared in his weekly Power On newsletter.
Apple is trying something new with the iPhone Air, which is selling a thinner device at a mid-range price. This trick is already very popular among fans for Apple’s MacBook and iPad lines. Now, Apple is hoping that it supports the iPhone Air’s success. According to Gurman, the model could also set the stage for thinner iPhone Pros and foldable devices.
Based on the leaks, some new striking details about the lineup have also emerged.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max dummies feature SIM card trays, suggesting eSIM-only models will likely remain exclusive to the United States region. A Forbes report highlighted that this means that Apple may continue to offer two versions of the iPhone 17 series—one for the US and another for international markets. This follows as many countries lack eSIM support for prepaid plans.
The dummy also shows the ‘Camera Control’ feature is on all iPhone 17 models, contradicting previous reports that Apple was not planning to introduce it this time.
Another highlight of the leak remained the focus on iPhone 17 Air’s limited speaker holes. This might indicate weaker audio quality, which could be a result of designing a slimmer device.
