Apple has rolled out iOS 18.6 and is urging users to update their iPhones without delay. According to Apple’s security documentation, the release addresses over 20 security vulnerabilities, including a few critical issues.

While the company has withheld detailed descriptions of the flaws to prevent potential exploitation, its support page confirms that several of the fixes target WebKit, the browser engine behind Safari.

Those expecting major changes will need to wait for the more substantial iOS 26 update later this year. However, iOS 18.6 cannot be overlooked.

How To Download iOS 18.6

To update your iPhone, navigate to Settings → General → Software Update. The update is available for all supported models, including the iPhone XS and newer models, and is compatible with several iPad models as well.

What’s Been Fixed

Among the few user-facing changes in iOS 18.6 is a fix for a problem in the Photos app. Some users had reported issues sharing memory movies, which have now been resolved.

“This update provides important bug fixes and security updates, and fixes an issue in Photos that could prevent memory movies from being shared,” read Apple’s release notes.

Security Improvements

The bulk of the update is focused on plugging security gaps. One particular flaw involved VoiceOver, where an accessibility bug could potentially allow a passcode to be spoken aloud, which is a serious privacy concern. Additionally, the update fixes an issue involving maliciously crafted audio files, which could lead to memory corruption.

A significant portion of the update also targets WebKit, Apple’s browser engine used in Safari and other apps.

iOS 18.6 includes eight separate WebKit fixes to prevent issues such as:

  • Exposure of sensitive user data

  • Unexpected crashes in Safari

  • Memory corruption that could be exploited by attackers

For iPad users who cannot install iPadOS 18.6, Apple has also released iPadOS 17.7.9, which includes several of the same critical security fixes.

Why You Should Update Now

Apple strongly recommends that all users keep their devices updated to the latest software version. With multiple vulnerabilities identified and addressed in this update, delaying installation could expose devices to avoidable risks.

The company emphasises that keeping software up to date is one of the most effective ways to stay protected in an increasingly complex digital environment.

For those who value device security and smooth performance, even without flashy new features, iOS 18.6 is an update worth prioritising.
